At the age of 14 I started a band with my brother Dan in the small Border’s village of Coldingham. There were only 2 of us and we played in the utility room but it was a start and the beginning of an on-going relationship with creativity and the arts. My dad was (and still is) a professional fine artist and encouraged a keen and critical eye for design from an early age. Read the rest of this entry »

I am originally from Galashiels in the Scottish Borders but now a Leither. I wanted to be an architect, then studied Sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 1999. I had a studio for two years, then travelled for a year and a half. On returning I worked in book retailing and IT contracting before deciding to train as a photographer. I have an obsession with collecting and shooting with old and sometimes crap analogue cameras. I love Japanese cinema, good graphic design, and occasionally making furniture. In an ideal world, we should be writing and updating our blogs daily – ideally even more.
The trouble of course with ideal worlds is that they tend to be populated by smug self-righteous types, who have no grasp of reality and little to worry about apart from what’s coming up next on Cloud Cuckooland TV. Read the rest of this entry »

At times I will go to extreme lengths to get that ‘perfect’ picture; venturing outside in temperatures of -25 in the depths of winter, when normal sane people put the heating on & stay indoors; I’m usually heading out the door in freezing weather risking life & limb climbing mountains all to create & capture my passion for nature. This is what you pay for in an image; creativity, quality & a lot of effort. Read the rest of this entry »

I’m a freelance photographer in Glasgow. My main avenue is portraiture, and I try to do it with an edgy, contemporary twist. I’m very much against what I call “Shopping Centre” photography – those cheesy family portraits on a plain white background – there’s not a bit of originality in that (at least to my eyes). I shoot primarily on location – it’s rare for me to shoot in a studio environment, unless there are very specific reasons to do so. I’ve shot portraiture in dark alleys, atop sunny hills, in sumptuous hotel rooms, and even in the ladies loos. Anywhere that provides context and setting to an image.

Michael James is a club photographer. He also creates portraits and other types of commission, but his main body of work lies within clubs and events photography.
Michael’s first work included some random shots taken at Utter Gutter, ran by Madame S (featured in this exhibition), who encouraged him further. Over the coming months he became more practised in the art of taking photos with a view to capturing the “vibe” as well as the people. As time went on, the original Utter Gutter nights finished, and Michael got involved in other club nights working harder to make the pictures better from a technical standpoint and to capture the ambience. The internet is a wonderful thing: a gigantic online village where everyone can connect with each other, no matter how many physical miles they are apart.
It’s always on; always being updated – never standing still for a second. And if you’re a freelancer with a product or service which has potential to be sold anytime, anyplace, anywhere, sometimes it feels as though you’re constantly running after it trying to keep up.
So how do you take advantage of the world’s biggest market – without propping your eyelids open with matchsticks or jabbing yourself in the legs with knitting needles in an attempt to try and stay awake?
Here’s a couple of ideas. Read the rest of this entry »

Edinburgh, August 2010 and the dilemma of which show to see during the world’s largest, most prestigious and influential arts festival sparked an idea. It’s often the case that reviews are split across 20 websites or more and often the best is rather crudely posted outside a venue. Trying to work out what show to see Stephen Sheppard wondered why someone or something couldn’t simply collect, distil and organise all the reviews for customers. Read the rest of this entry »

Recoat have gathered together a group of 7 artists to showcase the genre; Pop Surrealism, a fairly young movement in the art world. The work is often inspired by comic book art, punk music, and pop, street, and underground cultures. As the name suggests, the work tends to be bizarre or twisted and themes are juxtaposed concerning visual jokes, politics, or pop references. There tends to be an emphasis on technical skill in creating the work, where old and new techniques of painting are married together and a respect is given to quality rendering. What prompted you to be a copywriter?
To go with the usual cliché, I have always been interested in writing – I couldn’t tell you how many novels I’ve started writing over the years. At school, languages were my passion and after studying Italian at university, my first foray into the world of freelance was as a translator. I loved it but often found myself wishing that I could write the website content I was translating from scratch, rather than just play with other peoples’ words and imagery. Look at freelancing through a particularly optimistic lens and you can compare it to playing a video game. Whether you’re chasing the highscore or trying to get to the next level, the parallels are there if you look hard (and yes, alright, tenuously) enough.
So, to celebrate Folio14’s newest category, with a little pinch of imagination and one or two of Mario’s magic mushrooms, here’s where the two worlds coincide.

It feels like I had my right hand cut off. No, worse: it feels like I had my right hand cut off, then dangled in front of me in a little paper bag.
