The Making of Dreghorn Studios
Like most I’d say photography started out as a hobby, grew in to a passion and blossomed in to a career. Originally I had intended to work in theatre having spent most of my youth and adolescence working in amateur theatre but when the time came to choose photography seemed equally enjoyable and more likely to provide a living.
I’ve not had many dull moments; something about this job causes a never ending stream of interesting things to happen, from weddings on a flodded Loch to being in a meerkat enclosure. My proudest moment though was acquiring my own studio.
I had tried freelancing and running a home studio out of the spare room in my flat however I couldn’t get over the unavoidable side effects of a lack of space and that feeling of professionalism. The real turning point was when a casual google search found literally hundreds of photographers within a mile of my home yet not one studio. I’d always loved studio work so I figured why not give it a go and so began what ended up being a 4 month search for a suitable property, followed by a further 5 months of renovation before the studio itself was ready.
Officially opening in April 2010 DP Studios has since served as a home not only for myself and business partner Jonathan Pritchard but for the ever expanding team of creatives I regularly work with. What makes this studio unique is the ethos behind it: to be not just a working space but as a home for all photographers and creatives in and around Glasgow. The space is incredibly versatile and has can be used by photographers, videographers, theatre groups and bands. We want people to feel part of a community and to that end we run bi-monthly networking shoots in the studio so people can come along, make contacts and get some shots done.
Friend and joiner Chris McColgan designed and built the studio. His industry experience and expert carpentry and joinery skills have created the professional space I was looking for. Find out more about his commissions and services by email.
In regards to my own work I’d say my two main strengths come from my background in theatre directing and my love of studio lighting. Actors are a good lot but I will say that after working with them for years directing other people in their posing is a much less dramatic affair, yet no less rewarding.
Its has been said more than once that my love of lighting ventures well in to the realms of geekery but it has also been said that the payoff for my obsessive attention to lighting detail can be seen in my photos. Regardless of whether it’s a portrait client or experienced model I make a point that every shoot I try something new with the lights, to give the photos that extra touch of individuality.
I always love working with new people so anyone can send me a message and we can arrange a chat in the studio over a cuppa.
